Ocean’s 13 (IMDb)
Steven Soderbergh (IMDb) - calls himself Peter Andrew as cinematographer.

Hostel 2:
Thanksgiving trailer from Grindhouse - WARNING, this is a trailer in the middle of Grindhouse so is technically a spoiler and is also fairly graphic (nudity and gore).
I fuckin’ LOVE this faux trailer. Michael Biehn: “Son of a bitch.” -After the deputy TASTES the blood! Brilliantly and sickly hilarious. Maybe the best line in all of Grindhouse.
Away from Her:
Sarah Polley:

Julie Christie:

Bruce Greenwood:

eh. What a couple of dorks!
How did we get talking about Bruce Greenwood…probably from the Sweet Hereafter conversation…Those photos make it look like he is in Away From Her. The Canadian Man-God that is Gordon Pinsent is the lead in Away From Her.
Oh and I watched first episode the Bruce Greenwood starring new HBO series “John From Cincinnati” - strange, a tad surreal (edging into twin peaks area) and compelling, but It’s not immediately catchy…I’m going to stick with it for now though…
Yeah, those guys in the picture are total tools.
Anyway, since I’ve posted the Thanksgiving trailer, I’ve watched it like 6 times. Michael Biehn makes me lol every single time.
I need to start taking notes when I listen to the show because you guys talk, I get an idea, I don’t write it down because I think I’ll remember and then something else comes up I want to mention and I forget the first thing! Bad memory. My bad.
With 30 minutes to go, here are some comments - might be back with more.
1) Away from Her was a fantastic movie. Polley is immensely talented and I can’t wait to see how much better she’ll do with her next film. And I completely agree with Kurt - very refreshing to see a mature relationship on screen. Doesn’t happen nearly enough.
2) I am Legend - I will admit to not having seen either “The Omega Man” or “Last Man on Earth” yet (they’re on my coffee table for the weekend) but I highly recommend you give the book a read. “I Am Legend” is easily the best vampire novel since Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and it’s not very long either. The truly amazing part is that it holds up so well in today’s literary world, 50+ years after it was written. BRILLIANT.
3) 30 Days of Night - Sam Raimi’s name. I’m in. Either of you see “Pitch Black”? The trailer reminded me of that as well.
4) 1408 - Mikael Håfström. Directed “Derailed” which was better than I expected but also one of my favourite films “Evil”. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.
5) I can’t remember where I read or heard it but apparently Bekmambetov was told to wrap the story up in two films. I wouldn’t hold my breath on a 3rd. If I find the story, I’ll post the link.
6) Great homework assignment. One of my favourite Egoyan films.
Another great show!
A few things:
1) In regards to The Invasion, I was just reading over at horror-movies.ca that the 70s version with Donald Sutherland is getting an uber-packed, 2-disc DVD in August. I may have to get this.
Specs:
Commentary by Philip Kaufman
Re-Visitors From Outer Space or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love the Pod
Practical Magic: The Special Pod Effect
The Man Behind The Screams: The Sound Effects Pod
The Invasion Will Be Televised: The Cinematography Pod
———————–
2) Marina, LOVE Pitch Black. In my top 100 easily (maybe top 50; can’t remember). Which REALLY needs to be updated. King Kong? What was I thinking?
I haen’t seen Evil, but will check it out as I agree, Derailed was much better than I thought it would be.
Thanks for listening…
Great 100 top list. I’m surprised “American History X” isn’t in the top ten but then again, the ones that are in there are just as good if not better.
I don’t think I could make a list. Much too difficult.
A friend of mine has raved about the Swedish film Evil. That’s the one that is treading the same territory as Lindsay Anderson’s “If…” meaning it is about a boarding schoolboy that gets in trouble and is harassed…correct?
Absolutely correct. I’ve never seen “If…” but what seals “Evil” for me is that I’ve only seen it once (4 years ago at VIFF) and the performances from Andreas Wilson and Henrik Lundström have stuck with me.
I recently ordered the DVD so I hope to revisit it soon. I’m sure I’ll have more to say after the fact.
If… is coming out on Criterion later in the summer I believe, give it a shot. There is no doubt in my mind that Malcolm McDowell got the Clockwork Orange role because of this work in If…
Lindsay Anderson’s entire “Mick Travis” trilogy (If…, O Lucky Man, and Britannia Hospital) are all worth visits…
Great show.
I agree with everything Marina says about the book “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson. A brilliant novel and one of my absolute favourites. You guys must read it before seeing the movie as I’m pretty sure the movie will be a disappointment, particularly now they have turned it into a Will Smith blockbuster. Look at I, Robot: What a travesty!!
I loved the 1978 version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Saw it when I was about 15. It scared me too, particularly the final shot.
One criticism: I wish you wouldn’t get so snooty about films like Fantastic Four 2. I’ll go see it (on DVD). I enjoy a big dumb movie from time to time.
I saw the listing of the “If…” Criterion at the local shop. I’ll wait to see it before I put down some money but I’m definately interested.
The good news is that the movie is finally available somewhere on DVD! best way to see this on a budget is to use an online rental service, most of which will be stocking copies of this film.
Oh, BTW, both this film (If…) and you (Marina) are mentioned in Cinecast #52
[…] little while ago Kurt mentioned some European Ratatouille posters over at Movie Patron. I’ve been meaning to post them here for a while now. So, here they are better late than […]
