Great show as always guys. Like I have said before I enjoy that you don’t limit the time and you just go on random tagents and take as long you want to discuss everything and therefore no discussions really get cut short.
Oh and you mentioned NO ONE commented on if we like the shownotes and I would just like to say that even though I don’t look at EVERY trailer or imdb actor page etc it is just nice when I don’t know who someone is etc I can just go right to the specific page you (Andrew) provide.
I absolutely love it when you guys disagree on a film completely (in this case with 1408
) and it’s fun listening to you both fighting your own corner.
Anyway guys great show like I said and keep up the good work!
PS: I am sitting here in anticipating your “special announcements” Andrew!
I agree with Ross, I do like the show notes. I don’t follow along with them while listening as I usually listen while walking to and from work but I do go and read them afterwards.
As for your best of/worst of list I just posted mine over at http://www.filmgrotto.com/?p=165. Check it out and let me know what you think.
There were a couple things I forgot to mention.
1408: I talked about the close quarters thing, but I didn’t really make it clear how important that was to the story. I really liked the fact that Mike (Cusack) had no where to go. In other movies, the character can run around and get lost and chase and whatever. In 1408, there’s no where to run. Mike has to just grin and bear it. And the way they explain that he really is alone and can’t escape is creepy and illustrated (quite literally) very nicely.
Also, nearly right away (its in the trailer, hence not a spoiler) there’s a countdown clock. The cool thing is, we have no idea what the countdown is for or what happens when it gets to zero. This bring about a huge feeling of anticipation.
Pixar: Kurt mentioned one a year for Pixar. I really hope that’s not the case. Back in the day, Disney used to put out a film about once every 5 years or so. Then after Aladdin came out it was about every 2 years, then every year - until eventually they were (and are) churning out a movie every 6 months or less. This was really the downfall of Disney in my eyes and the films were no longer “special.” They were just another cartoon based on another tall tale or fairly tale or legend. It got lame. I hope Pixar doesn’t go down this dark road.
DVD picks: While Kurt was explaining Who Can Kill a Child, I wasn’t really paying attention as I was trying to fix a technical glitch that was happening. I tried to cover for it, but by the time I chimed in, I had no idea what he was talking about LOL. When I listen now, this movie sounds wicked as hell. I added it to my queue immediately and I anticipate its arrival for the weekend.
Oh yeah, and Paprika sucked.
Cheers!
Another great show. You guys are now on the top of my queue of things to listen to every week - as anticipated if not more than another show that I know Andrew listens to, Filmspotting.
Onto the comments.
Code 46 - I mentioned this as well during our June preview and I couldn’t believe how many people haven’t seen it. I may have to give it another viewing if I have time this weekend.
Cube - YEY! I love this movie and it has nothing to do with the fact that I had a chance to talk with Natali back when this came out (nearly 10 years ago…). OK, I guess maybe that had something to do with it too but it’s very good. And I’ve enjoyed the rest of his films. Though “Cypher” wasn’t quite as good “Nothing” is a greatly under-rated low key little comedy. I had great fun with that one.
Once - I ran home and bought the CD after leaving the theater. Excellent little film. And the closing shot….nearly made me weep.
Paprika - My review for this one is coming but I’m on Kurt’s boat this time. I was memorized by the film and immediate ran out to pick up “Perfect Blue” and “Ghost in the Shell” both of which I hope to get to this weekend. Looking forward to them both.
1408 - Pretty much what I expected though I’m really hopeful that Håfström chooses to make another Swedish film or a drama. He’s so much better than this though I will agree that it had a few genuine frights.
DVD Picks - So I picked up “Behind the Mask” last night and am thoroughly looking forward to it. As for Kurt’s picks, they’re getting added to the never ending list.
PS. I’m dying to hear about the announcements!
good show. man that “outro” lasted 15+ minutes - love it. hah.
1) I’ve loved Winterbottom’s Road to Guantanamo and 24 Hour Party People, but loathed Tristram Shandy. I could see what he was trying to do, but it is just wasnt funny or entertaining to me. As for this film, I will rent it when it comes out, but you can add me to the list of people that cant get over that its Jolie. I feel the same way about Tom Cruise in certain roles, and of all people, um, Renee Zellweger. I also dont really LIKE Jolie as a person, will especially dislike her when he makes that Ayn Rand movie, and basically view her as Lara Croft and only Lara Croft. She’s a cartoon human being to me.
I also cant understand the love for 1408. I havent actually seen it but after the previews were so horrible and yet the reviews were so good, I was a bit confused.
I had never heard of Paprika, but want to see it now just from those images.
I can see Andrew’s point about how Pixar are more team based, it is true to an extent, but after seeing the films so many times, I see a distinct difference between Lasseter and Bird. When you consider The Incredibles, and especially the Iron Giant, you see a very different mind at work from Pixar’s normal ways, and in the case of Ratatouille that should have been kept in mind IMO.
re: bursting into song - I for one love that sort of sponteneity. I dont mean musicals here, but random moments. Most people remember the ending of the 40 year old virgin, but one that sticks in my head is Patricia Arquette’s random song in the first third of “Human Nature”.
Goon - for comic effect, the Simpsons do the ‘random burst into song’ thing very well. Surprisingly, I actually get a big kick out of that Grand-Theft-Auto Coke commercial running at the multiplex in front of every film (it hasn’t gotten old yet).
Human Nature is the only thing associated with Charlie Kauffman that I’ve not seen. All the feed back I’ve received is that it just plain sucks - Still Patricia Arquette singing intrigues me for some reason.
Also thanks guys for all the great feedback. I mean Andrew & I record just because we like to shoot the shit about movies…It’s satisfying that smart folks like yourselves are A) listening and B) actually anticipating the next show…Oi!!! Thanks.
Cheers.
KuRt.
walk into Human Nature with low expectations and I think you will be amused. It is by no means perfect, but I bought it on DVD and watch it every once in a while (good replay value) - the best reason to watch it is the amazing comic performance from Rhys Ifans, who I desperately wish to see in more movies because of it.
I just came back from Ratatouille - it’s the best Brad Bird AND best Pixar film to date, with depth beyond what is expected from an animated film, a kind of underlying emotion and inspirational quality i havent felt in years from a film…. this isnt just a Best Animated Feature lock, this is Best Picture material. Some of the usual Pixar elements are there, but in general this aims beyond your expectations and succeeds.
The theater erupted into applause at the end. I felt good about life and have been feeling sublime since i left the theater. Absolutely fantastic experience.
Interesting show, as always. I listen to four movie podcasts each week and you guys are definitely #1.
I think your show notes are a great feature of your website/podcast and I try to read through them each week. Please keep doing them!
Hey…what was that Clint Eastwood movie you were talking about in the last seconds of the podcast?????
Congratulations on being the first one to notice there’s an “easter egg” at the end of the shows. - Space Cowboys
to be fair, Kurt’s comment was taken from another conversation
are you serious Andrew? i’ve always noticed… but being new to your shows i assumed it was common knowledge to every other listener and didnt bring it up.
Wow! I can’t believe someone listens all the way to the end of those (increasingly longer) shows! Cheers Fellah’s, you keep listening, we’ll keep talking!
“Wow! I can’t believe someone listens all the way to the end of those (increasingly longer) shows!”
I am one of those people. I would never start listening unless I intended to do so all the way through.
“…you keep listening, we’ll keep talking!”
And we always look foward to it every week. I have mentioned this to Andrew and I will repeat it here - just let me know if you want an extra point of view as I would be more than happy to appear on the show (we would have to sort out the time difference problem but it should work out okay).
Hey guys,
Listening for the the first time and about to do some catching up on previous episodes. Great job!
Just wanted to chime in and say I agree with you about the new trend of films that leave it up to the viewer to keep up. United 93 was my number one film of 2006 (although Children of Men would’ve been a serious contender if i’d actually seen it in 2006) and I really enjoyed Zodiac. I think these ‘procedural dramas’, although somewhat cold and complicated, lend themselves well to these ‘based on true event’s’ films that re-tell stories that deserve something more than melodramatic made for television filmmaking.
Anyways, great show and i’ll continue listening.
